Description:
No single event in Cold War diplomacy has had such a dramatic impact as Dr. Henry Kissinger's now legendary secret visit to Beijing in July 1971. It symbolized a bold reversal of US policy towards an avowed enemy state- Communist China, and at another level it demonstrated how effectively clandestine contacts could be sustained at the senior-most levels in both countries, beyond public knowledge.

A vital ingredient in the success of Dr. Kissinger's visit was the role played by Pakistan as the intermediary, with Ambassador Agha Hilaly in Washington, and President Yahya Khan in Islamabad acting as the conduits for clandestine messages being relayed between the White House and Beijing. This book draws from the hitherto unpublished correspondence maintained by President Yahya Khan, interviews with officials responsible for the visit, and includes recently declassified documents which reveal fascinating insights into the discussions held subsequently by President Richard Nixon with Chairman Mao Zeodong and Premier Zhou Enlai during his follow on visit to China in February 1972.

Fakir Aijazuddin's eminently readable book discloses the first hesitant contacts between the US and the Chinese in 1969, and the correspondence developed thereafter. It describes the arrangements furtively made for Dr.Kissinger to 'disapper' for two days between 9-11 July 1971( ostensibly to Nathiagali on account of a stomach-ache ), the euphoria following Dr. Kissinger's successful completion of his daring mission, and then in a concluding chapter, it assesses the traumatic aftermath of the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

From a head, Through a head, To a head.
