Description:
A staunch supporter of the Pakistan Movement, Syed broke up with the Muslim League in 1945-6, just as it was poised for its tremendous victory. Timing like this could level most peaks of political ambition. But G. M. Syed lived to make other ill-conceived moves. When in 1983, under Zia, Sindhi blood was being spilled mercilessly, he stood aloof because he ‘did not subscribe to the MRD philosophy’- a point of view unlikely to be understood by a little-educated electorate who had found themselves caught in the clutches of a brutal present.
But in spite of his various miscalculations, his reputation was formidable enough to stay the hands of governments who would no doubt have loved to smother his uncooperative voice. This is the first major study of the life of G. M. Syed and provides a complete analysis into his political philosophy and various perspectives.
Review:
Tracing a direct lineage to the Holy Prophet (P.b.u.h), Syed Ghulam Murtaza Shah (G. M. Syed) was born into comforts, which not many from his village could afford. However, a passion for politics, led him out of his bed of roses and set him up on a journey of hardships and a struggle for the rights of Sindhis that lasted 74 years.

G. M. Syed is an anomaly among politicians. His reputation has survived miscalculations that would have annihilated most political leaders. He earned a vote of confidence and gained overnight popularity, amongst the Muslim League, after his passionate and moving speech for the cause of Pakistan amidst interruptions and loud objections by the Hindu contingent present at the meeting. Soon after, Syed broke up with the Muslim League and at a time crucial to the cause of Pakistan, a time that called for unity. Following his sudden whims and impulses, Syed, many a times has been labeled a traitor and an instigator of anti-State activities.
At one point in history the most reviled man in Pakistan, Syed through the course of his life, has served detention spanning over 30 years under various governments- both military and democratic. Yet his resolve of safeguarding the rights of the Sindhis never weakened.
He fought against the government when the refugees from India were continuously being piled into Sindh as he thought this would be a blow to the Sindhi identity. He joined hands with Altaf Hussain to unite the Mohajirs and the Sindhis in the better interest and for peace in the region of Sindh. He even went as far as to propose a separate homeland for the Sindhis- ‘Sindhuland’ to safeguard the culture and ideology of the Sindhis.
This is a penetrating analysis and a detailed study offering glimpses of the man’s political philosophy and in doing so this study is the only of its kind which tries to solve the enigma that G. M. Syed was.
