Description:
Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's album is a wonderful and passionate celebration of traditional Sufi music, invigorated by the spirit and energy of a new generation.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the most revered Qawwal before his death in 1997, at which time he passed the title to his nephew, Rahat. In accordance with tradition, Nusrat selected Rahat during boyhood and schooled him in the arts of Qawwali, eventually placing him at his side when Nusrat and party performed.
After seeing him sing with his uncle at one of Nusrat's final performances, producer Rick Rubin came to sign and record both Rahat's self-titled debut for American Recordings and also the soon-to-be released final studio sessions with Nusrat.
Rahat has performed to sold out venues worldwide, including the Hollywood Bowl and Central Park with a guest appearance by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. Rahat performed "Long Road" from the Dead Man Walking soundtrack with Pearl Jam at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Revealing himself as a worthy successor to his uncle, Rahat performs four extended songs on the album, the shortest exceeding 12 minutes in length. This is clearly music for reflection and meditation. Rahat's invocations cultivate a soothing, rhythmic quality, and while the tabla often surges to the fore, the accomplished instrumental array ornaments and enhances without ever overpowering the stunning vocal solo and ensemble performance. The interlocking voices weave and wail, swoop and soothe in perfect cadence, borne ever higher upon a robust rhythmic and melodic underpinning. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a singer of powerful intonation and imaginative projection that's every vocal nuance constitutes a piercing cry from the soul by an emergent master. Complete list of tracks.
