Description:
'The two lovers watched the approaching light with growing dread. In no time it was upon them, and they saw that the light came from fifteen or more large torches beneath which was a large group of women of elfin beauty. As soon they set eyes on the women, they cried "Fairies", and fainted.'
And so Sharar's two fictitious characters find themselves on a fearsome page of historical truth. They walk into the
clutches of the Assassins - people who can leap to their death at a sign from their masters, and believe that they
are headed for paradise. But the spiritual masters also have amazing temptations up their sleeve for their credulous followers. As a reward for carrying out the most heinous crimes, they can send a man to paradise even while he is still alive.

Firdaus-e-Bareen, of which this book is a translation, is the best-known work of an outstanding Urdu writer. Yet, in 1899, when he finished writing it, Abdul Halim Sharar could hardly have guessed how interesting and relevant his novel would sound in the twenty-first century, more than a hundred years after he wrote it.
