At the time Munshi Premchand made his mark, there were already some scattered 'Afsaneys' circulating the market, written by people who have long been forgotten. However, really it was 'Soz-e-Watan' by Munshi Premchand, published in 1908 that established 'Afsaney' as a prominent part of the Urdu Literature.
Munshi Premchand's short stories are full of patriotism, love for the country, love for its people and strongly reflect on freedom and independence. This doesn't mean that all his contributions were limited to freedom and patriotism. Munshi Premchand never hesitated from experimenting; 'Barey Ghar Ki Beti', 'Begharz Mohsin' and 'Karishma-e-Intiqam' are a testimony to Munshi Premchand's versatility.
